The Story of the Unleavened Bread
Each year, the Jewish people celebrate the Passover, the Feast of Unleavened Bread. Passover reminds them about how God helped their ancestors “pass over” from being slaves in Egypt to being free in the Promised Land.
The Jewish people were in a great hurry on the night that they left Egypt. They did not have time to bake regular bread because it needs yeast to make it rise. It takes time for yeast to make bread rise into a fluffy loaf. That night the Jewish people did not have time to wait for the bread to rise. So they made bread without yeast. This bread is called “unleavened” bread. After it was baked, it looked like flat cakes.
Thousands of years later, Jesus and His family celebrated the Jewish feast of Passover. On the night before Jesus died, He gathered His friends to share a Passover meal with Him. They ate unleavened bread.
At this meal Jesus changed the bread and wine into His Body and Blood. Catholics call this special meal the Last Supper. It was the first time Mass was ever celebrated. The Apostles received their First Holy Communion at this Mass.
Recipe for Unleavened Bread
- 1 ½ cups whole wheat flour
- ½ cup white flour
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 ½ tsp baking powder
- 1 cup warm water
- 1 T oil
- 2 T honey
- Mix all ingredients together
- Add a tiny bit more flour if too sticky
- Divide into three parts and pat down onto parchment paper, making three “circles” about 1/4-inch-high (no higher than 1/2-inch-high)
- Bake 17-20 minutes at 350°
- When they are slightly brown on the edges, they are done
